Saunders was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He was an All-state basketball player at Cuyahoga Heights High School in suburban Cleveland. After being a player himself, he entered into the coaching world at Golden Valley Lutheran College where he compiled a 92–13 record, including a perfect 56–0 mark at home, in four seasons. He became an assistant coach at his alma mater, Minnesota, in 1981. There he guided the Golden Gophers to the Big Ten championship that season. He stayed there for five seasons and later became an assistant coach at the University of Tulsa. He worked for two seasons at Tulsa before heading to the pro ranks.
Saunders announced on August 11, 2015 that he had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Due to the disease he had to be hospitalized for a month. Later the complications grew further and unfortunately Flip left us on October 15, 2015.
Debbie and Flip
Debbie Saunders was born as Deborah Kay Hoeft. The couple first met in the early 1970s. Debbie was 23 and Flip was 21 years old. They were both students at the University of Minnesota at that time. Debbie and Flip had a connection which everyone will look up to in future. They had a successful marriage of nearly 40 years and only death could separate them. Debbie stood by her husband’s side during his battle with cancer.
You will be surprised to know that Debbie is also an alumnus of the school and the dance line. The couple’s oldest son, Ryan, also played basketball with the Gophers before going on to stage his own NBA coaching career.
The Family Bond
The couple had four children together, three daughters and a son. They became parents for the first time in April 1985, when they welcomed their son Ryan into the world. Ryan is now an assistant coach with the Timberwolves. The couple has three daughters, Mindy, and twins, Rachel and Kimberly. Mindy also attended the University of Minnesota. She married Ryan Vint in August 2013. Rachel and Kimberly had interest in dancing. They even competed on National Champion teams in both Jazz and Pom. They also performed on Star Search when they were just 10 years old. Debbie and Flip must really be proud of all their children.
Ryan says that his mom is like a glue which kept the whole family together. He said that his mom kept the whole family going. Ryan was very close to his father and apparently they daily talked to each other.
Where are they now?
As we told above, that everyone is now carrying on with their life with the grief of beloved in their heart. It must be a difficult time for Debbie and we wish all the strength to her to go through this tough time. After all, seeing a loved ones death after being with them for nearly forty years is an unbearable thing. Rest in Peace, Flip.
