American professional golfer, Phil Mickelson’s wife is Amy Mickelson. Philip is famously known by his nickname “Lefty” because of his left handed swing style. He has won 42 events on the PGA Tour, including five major championships: three Masters titles, a PGA Championship, and an Open Championship. Impressive isn’t it?
Let’s talk a little bit more about Philip before moving onto his wife. Philip is one of 16 golfers in the history of the sport to win at least three of the four professional majors. He has won it all except U.S. Open. He has been described by The Economist as “golf’s best loser ever”.
Now that we’ve talked enough about Philip, let’s talk about his beautiful wife, Amy.
Amy Mickelson – The classy golf wag
Before marrying, Amy was known by the name Amy McBride. Now she is proud wife, Amy Mickelson.
The couple first met in 1992. She was a cheerleader for the Phoenix Suns. Phil had just graduated from the same school and was beginning his career tour. After dating for nearly four years, they decided to take the wedding vows on Nov. 16, 1996. They are blessed with three children, Amanda, Sophia, and Evan.
Sources say that there were some complications when Evan was born. Amy has been unlucky with her health as she also got diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2009.
When Amy was diagnosed with cancer the golf world turned upside down. Many players showed support for Amy by wearing donned pink pants during the period. The PGA Tour also held a “pink out” the following week.
Fortunately the diagnosis happened at an earlier stage and Amy proved to be a fighter. She survived the breast cancer. Kudos to her!
Both Philip and Amy are involved in a lot of charity work and social causes. Amy has been quite active on the Breast Cancer scene and does a lot to spread awareness.
The couple started the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation in 2004. The foundation supports a variety of youth and family initiatives. Together, they also founded “Birdies for the Brave” to raise money in support of combat-wounded veterans.
The Golf Life
When Amanda was born in 1999, Phil was playing in the US Open. It happened right around the time Phil was competing against the late Payne Stewart.
Though Phil lost, Stewart told Mickelson immediately after the game that he’s going to be a great father. Great sportsmanship there!
Regarding the event, Amy had a roller coaster of emotions and said, “It was very, very emotional watching it. Payne makes this big putt at the end and it was kind of surreal. It never occurred to me that Phil wasn’t going to win. So that was hard.”
She also proved to be a great person and said that Payne deserved the win as he was playing in great form at that time. She said it was incredible.
